Adobe Photoshop is one of the best designing software out there, so many people use Adobe Photoshop that now even the clients demand for the PSD files sometimes. But sending PSD files in emails, ohh man I wish PSD files were smaller in size. Today I will tell you how you can reduce Adobe Photoshop PSD Files Size to mail to your client or just to simply put in your computer.Reduce Adobe Photoshop PSD Files Size by 75%

How to Reduce Adobe Photoshop PSD Files Size by 75%

The first thing you need to check for is that if your PSD files have any extra layers? There are sometimes hidden layers which are of no use, delete them. Keep only those layers which are making the design possible.

Next when you have got all the layers after deleting junk layers, make every layer hidden or you can simply put everything in a group and make it hidden and save the file. Doing this would have reduced the size of the PSD file by 30%

For the extra 45% reduction of the file size, compress the file with Win RAR or any other file compressor and then see the magic.

You can now send the PSD file as a mail attachment or upload anywhere easily. It is small in size with all the layers and everything.

Designing Splash Screen for Windows Phone Application [Guidelines and Checklist]

Posted On // Leave a Comment

After the collaboration of Microsoft and Nokia, Nokia Lumia Windows 8 phones are really in popular demand and so are the Windows 8 apps. There is an very large increase in Windows 8 app developers who are developing Windows 8 apps regularly. In this tutorial we will learn "How to design Splash Screen for Windows Phone Application"

Windows have certain Guidelines and Checklist which should be considered while designing the splash screen for Windows 8 application otherwise your application can be rejected by the Windows 8 app Store moderators.

How to Design Splash Screen For Windows Phone Application

  • Windows 8 phone application splash screen size
  • Your splash screen consist of an image and a background both of which you can customize. When you are designing your splash screen it should contain an Background and an image on top of it. The background should be a solid background not any textured background. The image on top of the background should be only the logo of the Windows 8 phone application.

  • Create an extended splash screen so that you can complete additional tasks before showing your app's landing page.
An extended splash screen is an optional screen that follows after the normal splash screen. You can use it to show a login form, or to show a loader while your application is initializing. Although the splash screen and extended splash screen should share the same design/layout to avoid abrupt transitions, an extended splash screen is not constrained to the same rules above.
Do use a loader icon as part of your
Extended Splash Screen
You can't add loading icon on your splash screen.

  • Don't use the splash screen or your extended splash screen to display advertisements.
  • Don't add Login Form as part of your Splash Screen. Don't ask for login details on the splash screen instead of that create an extended splash screen for Login Form.

  • Don't put any kind of website URL on your Splash Screen.
  • Don't put any kind of Version data like version 1.1 or 1.4 anything on the splash screen.
  • Don't include any text if it is not the part of you logo.

Designing Splash Screen For Windows Phone Application

Windows Store will not accept your application if your Windows 8 Phone Application is not designed as per the above points. To be short and simple for the splash screen just create a solid color background with no texture and put your simple logo on it. No text, no logins, no loading nothing, only your logo. If you want to add those other stuff like Login Screen and loading icon try the extended splash screen concept.

I have designed many Windows 8 Phone Applications and 2 of them were specially mentioned by Microsoft on their Facebook page for the Splash Screen.

Why is GIMP better than Adobe Photoshop?

Posted On // Leave a Comment
Photoshop is one of the most used Software by designers or I say wannabe designers(you will know why). But there is one software known as GIMP, you might have heard about it before and ignored it because of its ugliness. But today I am going to tell you Why GIMP is better than Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop is one of the most widely used program by Designers. But the Majority of designers using Adobe Photoshop is nothing but just some wannabe kids trying their best to get a subtitle as Designer. Photoshop is powerful I know that but what if there is already one program that do all that work for you.

Here are some my reasons why I choose GIMP over Adobe Photoshop for designing graphic on my computer.

Why is Gimp Better than Adobe Photoshop?
Why is Gimp Better than Adobe Photoshop?

WHY IS GIMP BETTER THAN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP?

  • First and best reason - ITS FREE Yes GIMP is a completely free to use software and it doesn't charge you a penny to install it on your computer. Older versions of GIMP weren't as good looking as Adobe Photoshop but with GIMP 2.8 release I made my mind shifted to GIMP full time. I design all my graphics on GIMP.
Adobe Photoshop is an Expensive software they charge hundreds of dollars just to one release of the software and when you want to upgrade to the latest software you need to pay again. GIMP on the other hand is completely free of cost and doesn't charge a penny for installing it for first time and nor for upgrading to the latest release.

  • GIMP is way more smaller in SIZE than Adobe Photoshop - Adobe Photoshop takes GBs of space on your computer and on the other hand GIMP only takes around couple of hundred mp of space and still does all the good job as Photoshop job does. This is one more reason why GIMP is better than Adobe Photoshop.

  • Adobe Photoshop is extremely resource intensive - Installing and running Adobe Photoshop on your computer uses a lot of RAM and CPU usage on the other hand GIMP does the same job with way less usage of RAM and CPU and still does all the great job like Adobe Photoshop.

  • GIMP is open source architecture - this means any one including you and me can edit the code and design it according to our own usage and develop plugins and new features for the program and you don't even need to get permission to someone like they do on Adobe Photoshop.

  • GIMP went ahead of Photoshop as it can also edit, open and save PSD format files so you actually don't need to switch to Adobe Photoshop for PSDs.

  • One major thing I like about GIMP is that it can be run on all the platforms, Linux, Mac, Windows, etc. Whereas Adobe Photoshop is not available for Linux users. that is one major con of Adobe Photoshop.
GIMP is really a better software than Adobe Photoshop, but still people prefer Adobe Photoshop over GIMP as it is really easy making money online Designing Graphics on Adobe Photoshop. But as a professional Graphic Designer I would prefer GIMP as best. I can work fast and easy way.

Just remember it is not about Hard Work, its about Smart Work. ;)

How to learn GRAPHIC DESIGN

Posted On // 2 comments

I always get so many questions like "How to learn Graphic Design" "I want to become a Graphic Design, where can I start?" and more. So, from now on instead of replaying to all those mails, I will just simply send them link to this post (Lazy me :D ).

How to learn GRAPHIC DESIGN

So, the first thing you need to know is that it takes a lot of hard work! Just like any other skill, it takes a lot of time and hard work to develop a eye for design processes.

Many people think learning any software like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw or something like that is the only thing to Graphic Designing. But trust me it is more than that, you can learn operating the software but the creative skill will still miss inside you. When you will get your first customer and he will ask you to design a new logo for him, you won't be able to think of anything creative and unique. You will end up copying someone else's design from the internet.

If you want to start I would recommend developing a good drawing/sketching skill inside you first. As Picasso has said -
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.
If still you have doubt like "I am not an artist" or "I don't have drawing talent inside me" read that quote again. When you will start you won't be as good as some famous illustrator but practice will make you perfect. I am still not perfect as I don't practice that much as I should be :P

While you are developing your sketching skills I would advice you to visit your local library and picking up some books that can help you learning some more about Graphic Design. Here are list of some books that will help you develop some an eye as a graphic designer -
  •  - Typography is Bread and Butter of a Graphic Designer. This book will teach you everything about Typography, its history, origin of type families and all the stuff that you should know before you actually start doing it.

  • - This is another great book on Typography, this book is very easy to follow and it has got a really awesome book cover.

  • - Before you start putting yourself into this graphic design world you might want to know a little about history of graphic design. This book is really great to start with, it has got really nice summary of everything and most of everything what you need to know.
Now, these things will be enough to start you with your graphic design career and if you don't have money or you are on tight budget and really don't want to spend money on buying Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw (because these tools are heck very expensive) you can start with a Free tool Gimp, you can download it for free.

Remember to develop a skill not just learn how to operate the software, no matter how good you start designing on computer never stop Sketching on Paper.
